There is another individual to whom your two bear a resemblance, a fellow who, were he in BB's shoes, no doubt be urging his colleagues to "hike those bastards back to the stone age."
For whatever reason, it was Tin Tin's friend, Captain Haddock (without his hat), who first came to first in BBs likeness. But when I juxtaposed them, Herge's hirsute character looked much more like Bruce Kovner in his younger years, than BB. My middle offspring has been bit with Tin Tin bug so I, too, am re-reading them while I wait for my oldest to finish the "last" Potter.
I must confess that the whole Tin Tin thing has utterly passed me by. Babar was my preferred European children's literary import.
